Estes Park Fly Fishing

Our guided fly fishing trips in Estes Park offer convenient, productive fishing right in town—perfect for anglers of all experience levels. We have special access to fish both the lake and the ¼-mile tailwater section of the Big Thompson River just below the dam. The lake is heavily stocked during the summer months, making it an excellent option for consistent action, especially during spring runoff when the freestone rivers are blown out.

The tailwater section fishes like a classic technical tailwater, often requiring small flies and light tippet to fool some of the larger, more selective trout. For those looking for a different angle, we also have boats available and can put them on the lake for a float-style experience instead of wading.

Target Species

This fishery is primarily home to rainbow and brown trout, with nymphing being the most consistent method throughout the year. However, a dry-dropper rig can be productive, especially during the warmer months. One unique thrill in this area is the occasional appearance of a tiger musky—an aggressive, rare fish that always gets the adrenaline pumping when spotted. While not the main target, their presence adds excitement and a wild card to the day.

Where We Fish

We fish the accessible flats and shallows of the lake, where anglers can wade out and target trout cruising along cuts and drop-offs in the old river channel. These zones hold fish throughout the season and offer a mix of easy casting lanes and technical sight-fishing opportunities. Whether you’re wading the shoreline or taking a boat out to explore, the variety and proximity make this trip a favorite for visitors and locals alike.
