Guided Fishing On Horsetooth Reservoir in Colorado
Spend the day chasing hard-fighting smallmouth and largemouth bass on Horsetooth Reservoir, Fort Collins’ premier warmwater fishery nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Known for its clear water and rocky structure, Horsetooth is a light-line, finesse fisherman’s dream. We focus primarily on bass using conventional tackle, dialing in techniques that match the conditions and keep rods bent throughout the day. The lake also offers excellent opportunities for walleye and trout, giving anglers a chance at multiple species in one trip.
The best fishing of the year typically happens in May and June, when fish are active and feeding aggressively. With stunning foothill scenery, dramatic rock outcroppings, and panoramic mountain views surrounding the reservoir, this trip delivers more than just great fishing—it’s a true Colorado experience. Whether you’re an experienced angler looking to refine your finesse game or a beginner wanting steady action in a beautiful setting, Horsetooth Reservoir is the perfect place to spend a day on the water.
Target Species
From April through July, the focus on Horsetooth Reservoir shifts with the season and fish behavior.
n April, as water temperatures begin to rise, smallmouth and largemouth bass move shallower and become more active, making it a great time for light-line finesse techniques worked slowly along rocky structure. Walleye are also a strong target early in the season, especially around points and drop-offs.
By May and June—the prime months—bass fishing is at its peak, with fish in pre-spawn and spawn patterns that reward precise presentations and conventional finesse tactics.
As we move into July and summer conditions set in, fish transition deeper and early-morning or late-evening bites become more productive. Trout remain a solid option throughout the spring and early summer, often relating to cooler, deeper water as temperatures climb.
Where We Fish
We fish throughout Horsetooth Reservoir, focusing on productive structure and seasonal holding areas that consistently produce quality fish. Much of our time is spent targeting rocky shorelines, submerged points, ledges, and offshore humps where bass and walleye relate to depth changes and structure.
In the spring, we key in on warming coves and transition banks, while summer trips often focus on deeper rock piles and drop-offs. With over six miles of water stretching through the foothills west of Fort Collins, the reservoir offers a wide range of terrain—and we stay mobile, adjusting locations and patterns to put you on the most active fish each day.
