Warmwater Fly Fishing

For anglers looking to break away from trout streams and experience something totally different, our warmwater fly fishing trips deliver big action and powerful fish. These guided trips take place on Front Range and eastern plains reservoirs aboard top-tier boats—a Robalo Cayman or a Crestliner Basshawk 18’—fully equipped with large outboards and trolling motors to cover water efficiently.

We use everything from floating lines to fast-sinking type 7 lines to reach the strike zone, depending on species and depth. You’ll throw baitfish imitations like Clousers, Deceivers, and sometimes topwater flies for explosive takes. Once we find a school of fish, it’s game on—you can do some serious damage fast. This is a more technical trip, best suited for intermediate to advanced fly anglers who can double haul and make longer, accurate casts to moving targets.

Target Species

These lakes and reservoirs are home to a mix of hard-fighting warmwater species including white bass / striper hybrids (wipers), smallmouth and largemouth bass, and carp. Spring and early summer offer peak action for wipers and bass as they hunt around structure and bait pods.

In the heat of summer, sight fishing for carp on the mud flats becomes a unique and visual challenge, rewarding anglers with drag-screaming runs.

Wipers, especially, are highly pelagic and chase bait balls, often schooling up and creating surface blow-ups that rival saltwater blitzes.

Where We Fish

We guide on some of Colorado’s best warmwater fisheries including Union Reservoir, Boyd Lake, Jackson Lake, and North Sterling Reservoir.

In spring, we focus on rocky points, riprap, and submerged structure. As water temperatures rise, we chase bait balls across open water and look for busting fish in the early morning and evening hours. For carp, we stalk mud flats in skinny water during summer, offering a totally different but equally exciting visual fly fishing experience.

Whether you’re chasing wipers, crashing bait or carefully presenting to cruising carp, warmwater fly fishing in Colorado is a thrilling alternative to the traditional trout game.
